Tribal Necklaces

Lately in fashion magazines the term "tribal necklace" has come to mean essentially one, typical style of the fashion. However, I think that the term should encompass all that would suggest something tribal and raw, such as feathers, beads, fringe, or anything else that you think defines that. Here I selected several different styles that I think are all great and could potentially describe this trend.

Father of the Bride

Father of the Bride (1950) is a comedy starring Spencer Tracy and Elizabeth Taylor. It was so cute, and really funny. I adore Spencer Tracy. Anyways, I love the time period, but I also loved seeing Elizabeth Taylor's wedding dress, which is over-the-top now but most likely fit in back then. So today I decided to pick out a wedding dress and a cute hair pin with it.

French Riviera

The idea behind the French Riviera look is to have all of the comfort and summery feel of beachwear combined with the fantastic chicness of European style. What more could you want, right? For this look, aim for stripes, polka dots, florals, or sheers, in lovely shades of white, pink, yellow, or blue. Then again, there isn't really a way to go wrong with this, so have fun.

Back to the Future

I know I keep posting these movies that I'm sure everyone has seen before, but I really did only watch Back to the Future for the first time last weekend. I knew it was made in the 80s, but I didn't realize how much of it took place in the 50s. So today I picked out some 50s-looking clothing. I adore that decade.

Ballerina Chic

One of my favorite looks for spring has always been that sort of ballet-type palette and silhouettes. So break out your most feminine pieces this spring in sweet, pale tones like whites, pinks, taupes, and grays. It can really be applied to any type of clothing or accessory, but I love it the most in a pretty little dress or skirt.

Orlando, Florida

Orlando is beautiful this time of year. It felt like summer to me, and was in the 80s all week long. Really I only had four full days there, but it was awesome. The first day my family and I went to Universal's Islands of Adventure, mostly for the Harry Potter section, which I fell in love with. Butterbeer is delicious, by the way. The second day we went shopping in the Orlando outlets and in Winter Park, which is an adorable little city just outside of Orlando with the most fantastic shops. The third day we went to Disney's Typhoon Lagoon, which was a blast, even for me, who doesn't particularly enjoy swimming. The fourth day we just relaxed, and visited the Fort Wilderness Lodge, which is gorgeous. When I was there, I bought the above skirt and a cute little cassette tape charm necklace ($2) at Forever 21 in the outlets and a Vera Bradley laptop cover case in Buttercup ($17) at one of the cute shops in Winter Park.

Call Me

Blondie is a female 80s icon, and I love her song Call Me. The music video for it is interesting, and I especially love the blue tank top and the short, dark daisy duke shorts outfit that she wears. By the way, to anyone who reads this, I'll be gone all next week in Orlando, so I won't be able to post until Friday or Saturday.

Top-Handle Satchels

Not the most convenient if you want to be able to swing your bag over your shoulder, but these top-handle purses are great for spring. Pick them in a pretty color or print, and make sure that the shape is square or slightly rectangle, with a small handle on top. They look great swinging alongside a skirt or dress in the springtime.

2. Flower Front Satchel, $98. victoriassecret.com
3. Candie's Erica Studded Satchel in Silver, $22. kohls.com

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a fantastic political movie masterpiece from 1939 starring Jimmy Stuart. It's funny, and touching, and just absolutely amazing. I love that era, too, and what Jean Arthur wears as her character, Clarissa Saunders, is great. She's a masculine character, as a woman in the 30s with a political job, but she wears some great, interesting feminine pieces as well, like the blouse above.

High Waists in Bright Colors

The high-waisted trend I've always been afraid to try, especially being short, but this spring's new looks have got me itching to wear it! Pick skirts, shorts, or capris in bright colors or prints, and make sure that you wear them at your belly button or just below. Plain colors would look good with a white or black tank, while prints would be better with a tank in one of the colors found in the print. As for shoes, heels or wedges would be ideal to help lengthen your leg.

Whisper of the Heart

Whisper of the Heart is a Japanese anime movie done by Studio Ghibli from 1995, written by Hayao Miyazaki. I absolutely adore Hayao Miyazaki, and all of his work. This isn't my favorite of his movies, but I love it. It's cute and funny, while still exploring some deeper thoughts. There's one outfit that the character Shizuku wears that I think is so cute, which is a bright pink sweater with a yellow pleated skirt, so I picked out some pieces that are somewhat like that.

Sliver-Wedge Sandals

I've never really been a sandal or a wedge person, but for some reason this trend seems really spot-on to me. There are so many different ways to wear sliver-wedge sandals, and you can dress them casually or formally. They also come in tons of colors, and can be gorgeous in both the spring and the summer. Wear them with a flowy skirt and bright tank top or some cuffed shorts and a tee.

Waterloo

Abba was an extremely influential Swedish disco band in the 1970s. Waterloo, from 1976, is one of my favorite songs by them. Although their outfits in this video are definitely very 70s, pieces of them can be updated and worn just as well today.

Earthy Plaid

Ordinarily plaid is a fall print, but I think that this spring it should be popular, too. Plaid's great in any color, but earthy tones make it more outdoorsy. I also like it in cool tones for spring, like purple or blue. In an outfit with a plaid piece in it, I recommend wearing your other pieces in plain colors, hopefully ones that match with one of the colors found in your plaid piece.

Indiana Jones

Last weekend I finally watched Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) for the first time. Amazing I've never seen it before. Anyway, I thought it was great, and was inspired by both Indy's brown leather jackets and, interestingly enough, Karen Allen's tattered, flowy white dress. So here are some pieces that make those a little more wearable.

Japanese Art

I've never been to Japan, but I adore everything about their culture: their language, films, music, clothing styles, food... the list goes on. So today I decided to pick out some pieces that remind me of Japanese art or style.
